“Damnit!” Kelly cursed.

“What now?” Cliff asked.

“We just lost five more cavaliers. Lieutenant Vea’s convoy was hit in force, just like the two yesterday.”

“Damnit is right,” Cliff agreed with a sigh. “We can’t send out any convoys or high-value shipments without at least ten cavaliers accompanying them, Kell. Anything less, and we lose more ships.”

“It’s not fair,” she moaned. “The bastards only engage when they outnumber us. If they don’t, they just run away.”

“It means we need to take away the reserves I promised Matt and Christy.”

“Well, you warned them that you might need to.”

“Not before they even got them.”

“At least they didn’t get used to having them,” Kelly said with a wry smile.
